Republic Day Month

Republic Day is a very special occasion for everyone in India, especially for kids. Everyone is ecstatic but their enthusiasm knows no bounds on ‘Gantantra Divas’. It is the time when patriotism is in the air and notes of ‘Rang De Basanti’ are heard at every corner.

Do you remember celebrating Republic day as a kid? How excited we used to be for flag hoisting, watching the parade on DD national, wearing tricolor outfits, singing patriotic songs, and whatnot! The affair was no less than a festival for us.

To commemorate the old days, let’s revisit the past. We are sure a wave of nostalgia will sweep over you as you read the following ten things we did as a kid on Republic Day.

1. Wearing Tricolor or themed clothes

Not having a tricolored outfit was a big problem back then. Almost everyone was dressed in saffron, white, green, or blue with a tricolor flag badge pinned on the shirt. The outfits were well prepared in advance for the special day waiting to be worn on 26th January.

2. Flag hoisting in schools and societies

Though we did not like getting up early for school, 26th January was a different story. Watching the Indian flag rise high in the azure sky and waving in the air filled our hearts with love and pride for our nation. A tribute to the Ladooos and Samosas we got afterward that day in school is mandatory too.

3. Doing march past in school

The excitement for Republic day brewed the day we would start practicing for the march past in school. Students skipped classes just to take part in the activity. Some even performed dances and sang patriotic songs. Moving in unison was vital and whoever achieved that, was the winner. And how can we forget the notorious students who feigned collapsing on the ground just for fun during the practice sessions? They were the real back-benchers!

4. Watching Republic Day parade on DD National

Getting up early in the morning and then dressing up just to watch the Republic day parade on DD National was also one of the excitements. It was a way to witness the glory of our nation through variegated Jahnkis, emphatic dance performances by students, and a glimpse of our military power in full swing. And how can we forget the air show at the end by our valiant heroes? Seeing it gave us new hope and aspirations

5. Watching Patriotic Movies

Indians are movie fanatics, no question about it, but, the anticipation for watching patriotic movies with Samosas was on another level that day. ‘Border’ is hands down a fan favorite for evoking patriotism. The song ‘Sande se aate hain…’ is an absolute classic from the movie. Do you remember watching it with your family every Republic day?

6. Watching the lighting at the Rashtrapati Bhavan

The Rashtrapati Bhavan was well lit with gorgeous and scintillating lights on the auspicious occasion and some families had the ritual to visit the place. It was also a way to meet the people who share the same excitement for Republic day as we did. Watching the glorious lights just made our day!

7. Watching fighter jets and helicopters from the roof

Who would run to the terrace upon hearing the sound of the fighter jets and helicopters? All the kids were on the terrace with their sights fixed on the sky in hopes to spot just one of the passing jets. We all remember waving hands in praise if we saw one in the sky completely indifferent to the fact that no one could not see us from that height. But, it was fun!

Lastly, just remember how thankful we were when Republic day did not fall on a Sunday! Above all, Republic Day is a joyous occasion that unites all of us with the same feeling. Let’s celebrate this Republic Day the same way we did in our childhood to recollect old memories.
