Diwali is an auspicious occasion in the Indian culture and everyone celebrates this festival of lights with their loved ones. The most popular Indian festival, Diwali is celebrated throughout the country with zeal, pomp, and fervor. The streets are beautifully decorated with lights, paper lanterns, Diyas, and candles that are a sign of the inception of the festivities. With the marketplace getting crowded, people begin festive shopping and get involved in religious activities before five days.

When is Diwali celebrated?

It is celebrated on the new moon (Amavasya) or on the fifteenth day of the Karthik month every year. Being a religious festival, it marks the return of Lord Rama from fourteen years of exile (Vanvas) with Sita and Laxman as per the Hindu epic Ramayana. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. People worship Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Ganesh and Goddess Saraswati at this festival for positivity, wealth, prosperity, and well-being.

The Five Day long festivities

The grandeur of this festival lasts for five days or more. It begins with Dhanteras and ends on Bhai Dooj.

  1. First Day:

Dhanteras is celebrated two days prior to Diwali and people usually start the preparation for the festival from this day. They clean their homes and do some festive shopping for good fortune. Dhanteras is considered an auspicious occasion to buy expensive items like clothes, furniture, electronics, or jewelry.

People can buy gold coins with Goddess Laxmi engraved on them. Mobile phones, laptops, kitchen, and home appliances are sold the most on this occasion. Indians wait for this day a whole year to buy something special as the things bought on Dhanteras are believed to bring good luck and prosperity.
